Italian energy company Saipem will team up with clean energy company Qint’x to construct a 100 MW offshore solar farm ‘the Agnes Project’ in the Adriatic Sea off the coast of Ravenna. The two companies initiated the project in 2019. Saipem believes that the concession request for the offshore area and permit for the construction should be approved by the end of 2023. The company plans to bring the facility online by Q4 2025.
Through its subsidiary Moss Maritime, Saipem is also working alongside Norwegian oil giant Equinor to test an offshore floating solar array off the island of Froya in the Norwegian Sea. Saipem noted that the Agnes Project would be different from the Norwegian project as it will be adjusted to fit local weather conditions.
Moss Maritime focuses on the design and engineering services for offshore energy. The company plans to become a market leader in installing coastal and offshore floating solar power plants. The company intends to focus on Southeast Asia, North America, South America and the Mediterranean Sea. Moss Maritime believes that offshore PV installations will have a 5 to 10 per cent higher power production rate than ground-mounted installations.
