The REA managing director, Abba Aliyu has announced the successful commissioning of a 1MW solar hybrid mini grid in the Ibaragun and Robiyan communities in Ogun State.
The solar projects comprise a 500kW Isolated Mini Grid deployed by the REA through Darway Coast and another 500kW Interconnected Mini Grid deployed by GEAPP-RMI. Both projects would serve over 10,000 connections, including homes, businesses, schools, and healthcare facilities, now have reliable electricity.
The projects are products of the collaboration between the Rural Electrification Agency of Nigeria (REA) and Ikeja Electric, alongside The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) and RMI Utility Innovation Pilots Program.
According to the REA MD Abba Aliyu during the commissioning of the sustainable power projects, the people of Ibaragun and Robiyan can now unlock new economic and social opportunities. He appealed to the people to own the projects and protect them from acts of vandalism so that they can continually benefit from the projects.
The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) also lauded the project’s impact. Fauzia Okediji, Manager, Utility Innovation at GEAPP, remarked, “The Ibaragun mini grid demonstrates that transformative impact is possible when collective ambition, capital and innovative technologies align. Our alliance approach boosts energy access and drives climate-aligned growth.”
Okediji highlighted the DART programme’s role in scaling distributed renewable energy (DRE) solutions, creating economic opportunities across Nigeria and the continent.
The chief executive officer of Ikeja Electric, Mrs Folake Soetan expressed gratitude to all stakeholders, communities and agencies of government at all levels that provided guidance and support to this project.
