A review has shown that between 2013 and 2021, the oil and gas sector contributed an average of 4.5% to Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) out of about 20 sub-sectors. In 2021 also, domestic gas formed about 85% of Ghana’s gas demand for power generation. However, current conversations about climate action have heightened the push to transition from fossil-based fuels to cleaner energy sources with possible implications for Ghana’s nascent oil and gas industry.
The Minister for Energy, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, at the maiden University of Ghana Public lecture held in Accra, spoke on the topic “Energy Transitions: Reflections on the state of Ghana’s Oil and Gas Industry,” he highlighted measures through the energy transition framework document that will aid Ghana to attain clean energy fuel and find the balance between clean form of energy and the use of hydrocarbons by 2070
The Energy Minister also mentioned the government’s bilateral collaboration with other countries to ensure efficient, clean fuel production in Ghana.
