The 50MWp Boikanyo solar power plant in South Africa is set to commence operations. The plant is owned and operated by Boikanyo Solar, a special purpose vehicle set up by the plant’s shareholders, a consortium including the IDEAS Fund, an investment fund of the African Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM), Reatile Solar Power, Phakwe Solar, African Rainbow Energy and Power and Cicada Community Trust.

The plant, sited on 168 hectares of ‘low value’ farmland in the Northern Cape Province, consists of 184,000 solar panels producing 152 GWh annually. It will supply power to the state-owned Eskom grid via the 132 kV Siyancuma switching station near the solar plant.

The consortium was awarded the concession under the 4th round of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPP). The consortium was awarded a contract for the construction of six plants.
