62% of Nigerians Remain on Estimated Billing

According to information from the Key Financial and Operational Data of the Distribution Companies (DisCos) obtained from the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) website, 62.63 per cent of consumers were still on estimated billing as of September 2020.

The document revealed 11,841,819 registered electricity customers at the end of the third quarter of 2020. Of this number, only 4,425,628 (37.37 per cent) had been metered. “Thus, 7,416,191 representing 62.63 per cent of the registered electricity customers are still on estimated billing,” the document reads.

The document also puts the metering status of nine DisCos at below 50 per cent of its customer base. Only Eko and Ikeja DisCos performed above 50 per cent with metered customers making up 51.68 per cent and 51.09 per cent respectively. Kaduna, Kano, and Yola DisCos remain the worst-performing DisCos in terms of metering with 22.56 per cent, 21.40 per cent, and 19.03 per cent metered customers respectively.

  1. Gorvernment should force discon to stop Estimated billing this will make Discon to issue out meters to customers. illegal collection of money by Discon Staffs will stop.

    1. There was an order by the NERC capping estimated billing which essentially prevents a DisCo from charging consumers above a certain amount. The problem isn’t the order but its implementation.
