Following a recent victory for another location, Polish utility PGE announced on Wednesday that its unit Elektrownia Wiatrowa Baltica 1 placed first in the auction for a wind farm site in the Baltic Sea.
According to CEO Wojciech Dabrowski, the company has the ability to leverage synergy effects in the development of both projects in the future thanks to a permit to build Area 60.E.3, which is close to the group’s Baltica 1 project.
PGE Baltica won the most points in the competitive procedure for a license to develop Area 43.E.1 in the Baltic Sea earlier in January. On the 2.5 GW Baltica offshore wind farm, which will be delivered in stages — Baltica 2 and Baltka 3 by 2030, for example — it is already cooperating with Denmark’s rsted A/S.
The CEO noted that the company’s objective to increase its offshore wind capacity in the Baltic Sea to 6.5 GW by 2040 is closer to being realized with each new location permit.
Since the beginning of January, there have been three auctions for territories in Polish waters, the first of which resulted in a tie. According to Marek Grobarczyk, deputy minister of infrastructure, five procedures for offshore wind farms are scheduled for the beginning of 2022 and 2023 and another six for the beginning of 2023, according to Pap Biznes.
