REA Targets $200m in Financing for 100 Mini-grids

  • The 200 million additional financing target for 100 mini-grids is under the Interconnected Mini-grid Accelerated Scheme.
  • The Minister of Power recently commissioned the 990kwp Interconnected Mini-grid in Niger State, implemented by the REA.

The Rural Electrification Agency of Nigeria (REA) has disclosed plans to obtain an additional $200 million in financing to develop 100 more mini-grids that will provide clean, sustainable energy nationwide.

The agency made this known through its official LinkedIn handle shortly after the commissioning of the 990kwp Interconnected Mini-grid (IMG) in Lambata, Niger State. The commissioning was led by the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu.

The project, implemented by the REA under the Interconnected Mini-grid Accelerated Scheme (IMAS), is funded by the European Commission and the German government, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

The project, which aligns with the REA’s mandate and commitment to powering the unserved and underserved communities with reliable and sustainable electricity, aims to scale up to 1.5MW in the coming years.

During the event, Abba Aliyu, the Managing Director of REA, stressed that the project IMAS is enabling the agency to provide reliable electricity for Bands D and E customers.

“Why this project is important, honourable minister, is because it aligns with your strategy of creating reliability for Band D and E customers, as you are working to strengthen the national grid to continue to provide enhanced reliable electricity to Band A, B and C. Through the REA, we are also working on getting this reliability for customers in Band D and E, and this is one of the projects that demonstrates this”, he added.

The Lambata IMG Project

  • The Lambata IMG is designed to catalyse socioeconomic growth through the Productive Use of Energy in the community.
  • The project powers not only households but also healthcare facilities, schools, clinics, and other vital public facilities.
  • The Lambata IMG features 990kWp photovoltaic panels, a 900kW battery storage system, and an advanced energy management system.
