KEDCO Dismisses Power Shortage Claims in Northern States

  • KEDCO refuted claims of only a two-hour daily power supply in Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa, citing distribution records showing 3.9 to 4.7 GWh daily.
  • Ongoing upgrades caused recent dips, with improvements already visible and critical services unaffected.

The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has dismissed reports alleging that electricity consumers in Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa states receive only two hours of power daily.

Sani Bala, the head of Corporate Communications, clarified the company’s position on Tuesday, April 22. He revealed that energy distribution data from the past five days shows KEDCO receiving between 3.9 and 4.7 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity daily, far above the estimated 0.4 to 0.56 GWh that would support a mere two-hour supply.

Bala stated that the claim of a two-hour supply misrepresents the current power situation in the region. He attributed recent supply dips to ongoing upgrades within the power network, which aim to improve electricity delivery to customers in Bands B, C, and D.

He confirmed that essential services and critical feeders, including healthcare facilities, waterworks, and key businesses, continue to receive uninterrupted power despite the network upgrades.

Recall that in 2019, the Transmission Company of Nigeria suspended KEDCO from the electricity market for failing to meet its payment guarantee obligations. The Market Operator removed the company after repeated warnings and missed deadlines but reinstated the DisCo after addressing the issue.

According to Bala, many customers have already started experiencing improved supply. He added that KEDCO recorded an average of 14.44 daily supply hours in March 2025 and 9.40 hours between 1 and 17 April. He assured residents that ongoing infrastructure investments would deliver lasting improvements in power delivery.

Furthermore, he encouraged customers to report electricity issues through KEDCO’s official customer care channels, promising swift responses to all complaints.

Bala reiterated KEDCO’s commitment to making the electricity supply more reliable and equitable across Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa. He confirmed that the company is expanding and modernising its infrastructure to stabilise supply, reduce energy losses, and meet rising demand in the region.
