Hydro-Québec has launched a 300 MW call for interest as it kicks off a plan to install 3,000 megawatts (MW) of solar capacity by 2035. This move signals a significant shift in the utility’s strategy as it expands beyond hydroelectric power.
The call targets developers who can build solar farms connected directly to the distribution grid. Hydro-Québec aims to diversify its energy mix and improve long-term supply reliability through this solar expansion.
The utility wants regional industrial players to participate in the initial deployment. It sees this phase as the first step in a broader rollout of solar energy across Québec.
The Association de l’industrie électrique du Québec (AIEQ) welcomed the plan. AIEQ Chair Alain Sayegh described the initiative as “structured” and “scalable.” He said the strategy strengthens the province’s energy resilience and opens new economic opportunities.
“Québec must diversify its energy sources,” Sayegh said. “This plan helps us respond to growing demand and take advantage of clean energy markets.”
Hydro-Québec also plans to support solar adoption for homes and businesses. The utility will introduce measures to help customers install and operate solar systems independently.
It aims to grow decentralised generation by enabling more self-generation across the province. The new strategy supports both grid-scale and small-scale solar development.
Hydro-Québec has committed to working closely with host communities. It will engage with First Nations and Inuit partners throughout the solar rollout. The utility encourages these communities to participate in or benefit from local projects.
