BW Energy Takes Helm of FPSO BW Adolo in Gabon Shift

  • BW Offshore transferred operation and maintenance of FPSO BW Adolo to BW Energy Gabon on May 20, 2025, while retaining vessel ownership.
  • The lease terms remain unchanged, with a $100 million put-and-call option exercisable in 2028.
  • BW Energy Gabon aims to optimise field performance and streamline local operations during the June 30, 2025, transition.

BW Offshore has transferred the FPSO BW Adolo operations and maintenance to its subsidiary, BW Energy Gabon SA. The handover began on May 20, 2025, as part of the company’s restructuring plan.

BW Offshore keeps ownership of the vessel under an existing bareboat charter. The financial terms of the lease remain unchanged. The revised charter removes BW Offshore from operation and maintenance duties.

The company aims to delegate daily management to a local team. BW Offshore and BW Energy Gabon will manage the transition together until June 30, 2025, to ensure smooth and safe operations.

The FPSO BW Adolo operates on the Dussafu Marin licence, offshore Gabon. Since 2018, the vessel has supported production from the Dussafu field. BW Energy Gabon will now take complete control of field activities.

BW Offshore continues to hold the vessel through a dedicated subsidiary. The lease includes a mutual put-and-call option worth $100 million, which both companies can exercise in 2028. This option provides flexibility for future decisions.

BW Energy Gabon plans to use the new arrangement to boost efficiency. The company expects to streamline field operations and improve performance. Local control will help BW Energy align better with regional needs.

“Handing over control to BW Energy Gabon makes sense,” said Marco Beenen, CEO of BW Offshore. “They have grown their presence in Gabon and are ready to manage the asset directly.”

Carl K. Arnet, CEO of BW Energy, praised BW Offshore for managing the vessel over the years. “Now we can optimise field performance ourselves,” he said. “We thank BW Offshore for supporting us through this process.”

BW Energy Gabon will maintain the FPSO’s current technical setup. The company plans to continue production without any significant changes. It will take complete operational control after the transition ends in June.

This shift reflects an industry-wide move toward localised management. Companies transfer operational duties to regional teams to improve speed and lower costs.

Since the first oil in 2018, BW Adolo has run consistently and played a key role in Gabon’s offshore oil development. BW Energy Gabon aims to build on that foundation and drive further growth.

The transfer also supports Gabon’s goal of increasing local oil and gas sector participation. BW Energy Gabon will likely expand its local workforce and engage more regional service providers.

Both companies will prioritise safety and compliance throughout the transition and share regular updates to keep stakeholders informed.

BW Energy Gabon sees the FPSO as a central asset in its production strategy. The company plans to keep the vessel at the core of its long-term offshore operations in Gabon.
