The initiative, led through a public-private partnership between the government and key players in the telecom and renewable energy sectors, aims to reduce the nation’s carbon footprint and expand access to high-speed internet, even in remote areas.
Minister of Information and Communications, Mohamed Rahman Swaray, announced the launch on Monday in Freetown. “This is more than just a tech upgrade, it’s a transformational moment for our economy, education system, and future,” he said. “We are proud to be among the first countries in Africa to roll out a green-powered 5G network.”
The new 5G infrastructure runs entirely on solar mini-grids and other off-grid renewable energy sources, ensuring reliable service in off-grid and underserved regions. By avoiding fossil fuels and circumventing the limitations of traditional power grids, Sierra Leone is positioning itself as a leader in adopting clean technology among developing nations.
“We’re building not just faster networks, but smarter, cleaner systems,” said a spokesperson for the lead telecom provider involved in the deployment.
