Aquaterra Energy Signs Deal for UK’s Carbon Storage Project

  • Aquaterra Energy secured two contracts for the UK’s first offshore carbon storage project, covering well re-abandonment and CO₂ injection services.
  • The project aims to start in 2028 and store 4 million tonnes of CO₂ annually, supporting UK net-zero targets.

Aquaterra Energy has secured two landmark contracts for the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP), the UK’s first permitted offshore carbon storage project. These agreements represent a significant advance in the country’s efforts to decarbonise heavy industry and meet its net-zero targets.

Under the first contract, Aquaterra will re-abandon two legacy wells using its patent-pending Recoverable Abandonment Frame (RAF). This technology ensures long-term well integrity, making the site safe and suitable for storing carbon dioxide (CO₂).

The second contract tasks Aquaterra with providing seabed-to-surface well access services for drilling six new CO₂ injection wells. The company will deploy its carbon capture and storage (CCS)-ready high-pressure riser system, designed specifically for this type of application.

Regarding the award, George Morrison, CEO of Aquaterra Energy, said: “This is a milestone project for CCS in the UK. Our early recognition of the sector’s challenges has positioned us at the forefront of this pioneering initiative.”

The NEP will initially support three major carbon capture projects in Teesside. The partnership expects the first CO₂ injections to begin in 2028. Once operational, the project aims to store 4 million tonnes of CO₂ annually, substantially contributing to the UK’s national goal of capturing 20 to 30 million tonnes of carbon emissions by 2030.

In addition to serving domestic needs, the NEP sets a new global benchmark for offshore carbon storage. Supporting energy-intensive industries such as steel and cement production will help significantly cut emissions while fostering innovation in clean technology.

Aquaterra’s involvement reinforces the company’s offshore engineering leadership and commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
