NamPower Breaks Ground on Namibia’s 100MW Solar Project

  • NamPower has launched construction of the 100MW Sores |Gaib Solar Power Station, backed by N$1.6 billion in funding.
  • The plant will reduce reliance on imports, create 300+ jobs, and advance Namibia’s clean energy and climate goals.

NamPower has started building the 100 MW Sores |Gaib Power Station, Namibia’s largest solar photovoltaic (PV) facility. The company hosted a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the project’s official launch, 33 kilometres northwest of Rosh Pinah.

The project, named “Sores |Gaib”, meaning “Power of the Sun” in the Khoekhoegowab language, aims to significantly boost Namibia’s energy mix by reducing reliance on imported electricity and fossil fuels. Once operational, the solar plant will strengthen energy independence, support economic growth, and enhance climate resilience.

In addition, NamPower has invested N$1.6 billion in the project. Of this amount, N$1.3 billion comes from a loan secured through the German development bank KfW, as part of an intergovernmental agreement between Namibia and Germany. NamPower will also fund the remaining N$300 million from its internal reserves.

At the ceremony, NamPower Managing Director Kahenge Haulofu highlighted the project’s strategic value in the nation’s clean energy journey. “Our country has abundant sun, and we as a nation are ready to seize the opportunities that renewable energy offers. The 100 MW Sores |Gaib Power Station is a critical step in fulfilling that potential,” Haulofu said.

Furthermore, the construction phase will create over 300 direct jobs, prioritising local labour to drive skills development and deliver socio-economic benefits to surrounding communities. The project’s Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor has pledged to allocate 25% of the contract value, N$356 million, toward local content.

Beyond its energy and economic impact, the project includes a comprehensive Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP). This framework will also guide biodiversity protection and responsible community engagement, reinforcing NamPower’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

NamPower expects the Sores |Gaib Power Station to begin commercial operation by June 2026. The facility marks a significant step in the utility’s mission to provide reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity, while advancing Namibia’s broader climate goals and energy transition agenda.
