President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Engr. Dr. Abdullahi Garba Ramat as the new Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). This move by Tinubu is part of the government’s effort to accelerate reform and innovation in the country’s electricity sector.

At 39, Ramat becomes one of the Commission’s youngest leaders. He brings a unique blend of engineering expertise, public sector innovation, and digital transformation experience. His appointment signals the government’s renewed commitment to strengthening regulatory oversight, protecting consumers, and attracting investment in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).

Meanwhile, a strategic governance expert and multidisciplinary STEM professional, Ramat holds a PhD in Strategic Management from Lincoln University, a master’s degree in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering from India, and a B.Eng in Electrical Engineering from Bayero University, Kano. He also earned certifications from global institutions, including Harvard University, Microsoft, Google, and Gonzaga University.

Furthermore, as Executive Chairman of Ungogo Local Government Area (2021–2024), Ramat launched Nigeria’s first blockchain-based decentralised identity system, establishing the Ungogo Identity Management Agency (UIMA) and a local revenue authority (UIRA). Under his leadership, the UIRA deployed a cloud-based ERP system that tripled internally generated revenue and set a digital benchmark for local government finance.

Earlier, as Managing Director of the Kano State Metropolitan Agency, Ramat oversaw energy-efficient upgrades to public infrastructure and led power cost reduction efforts. He also developed a smart security platform, LURA, which integrates IoT, biometrics, and real-time analytics to strengthen community safety.

Beyond public service, Ramat is CEO of AG Ramat Global Link and AG Ramat Global Apex, which operate in engineering and technology consulting. He has earned recognition from global institutions, including the Pan African Youth Leadership Foundation, which named him one of the “50 Most Influential Young African Leaders” in 2022.

His appointment ushers in a new phase for NERC, with expectations for intelligent regulation, data-driven decision-making, and consumer-focused governance across Nigeria’s evolving power sector.
