ECN Launches Tool to Boost Industrial Energy Savings

  • ECN launched the Industrial Energy Efficiency Database to track energy use in high-consumption industries and guide evidence-based efficiency policies.
  • The platform will help companies adopt ISO 50001 standards, cut energy use by up to 30%, lower emissions, and boost productivity.

The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) launched the Industrial Energy Efficiency (IEE) Database on Thursday, August 14, to strengthen national energy efficiency policies and drive innovation in clean technology.

ECN Director-General Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, represented by Engr. Gbenga Olokede from the Commission’s Energy Transition and Linkages Department said the database will store and manage energy consumption data from selected energy-intensive industries. Developed under the UNIDO/Global Environment Facility’s Nigeria Industrial Energy Efficiency and Resource Efficient Cleaner Production project, the platform supports adopting UNIDO’s Energy Management Systems Standards (ISO 50001).

Abdullahi said the user-friendly tool will enable stakeholders to enter, update, and correct industrial energy data, providing evidence-based insights for policymaking. “Without comprehensive knowledge of how industries acquire and use energy, attempts to develop effective energy management policies would be baseless and counter-productive,” he said.

Lagos State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources Biodun Ogunleye said adopting industrial energy efficiency best practices could cut energy use by 10–30%, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and boost productivity. He noted that Lagos accounts for more than 60% of Nigeria’s manufacturing activity, making efficiency a national driver for sustainable growth.

Industrial Energy Efficiency Consultant to the ECN, Engr. Okon Ekpenyong said the database will help companies track energy use, identify savings opportunities, and transition to cleaner production methods.
