Econergy Connects 87 MW Oradea Solar Plant in Romania

  • Econergy Renewable Energy began commercial operations at its 87 MW Oradea solar plant in Romania, raising its operational capacity.
  • The company plans to add a 68 MW battery storage system to the site, boosting grid balancing and revenues, while expanding its Romanian pipeline of over 1.3 GW.

Econergy Renewable Energy has connected its 87-megawatt (MW) Oradea solar power plant to Romania’s national grid, bringing the facility into commercial operation as part of its expanding renewable energy portfolio.

The Oradea project is Econergy’s fourth photovoltaic plant in Romania, lifting its operational and ready-to-connect capacity in the country to 447 MW. The company is also building another 788 MW and expects to begin construction on an additional 559 MW by the end of 2025.

Econergy already operates Romania’s largest solar plant, the 154.7 MW Rătești facility, in partnership with Nofar Energy. Its other projects include the 92 MW Părău solar park, a joint venture with RGreen Invest, and the 55 MW Scurtu Mare plant, with Phoenix Holdings as a minority partner.

Econergy plans to add a 68 MW co-located battery energy storage system (BESS) to the Oradea facility as part of its strategy to integrate storage solutions. The storage unit is designed to provide grid-balancing services, support electricity price arbitrage, and generate additional revenue streams.

Israeli financial services group Phoenix Holdings partnered on the Oradea project and has invested more than EUR 225 million in Econergy’s renewable ventures in Romania and Poland.

“The successful connection of Oradea marks another important milestone for Econergy in Romania,” CEO Eyal Podhorzer said. “This achievement underscores our ability to deliver large-scale renewable projects while advancing our strategy of integrating storage solutions to maximise value for our stakeholders.”
