Launching a solar mini-grid in Jigawa marks a new chapter in the state’s energy development. Governor Malam Umar Namadi inaugurated the Kafin Hausa Mini-Grid Power Project, representing a major push for cleaner energy. Bagaja Renewables developed the 500 kWp solar-hybrid plant in partnership with Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) and Future Energies Africa.
The plant includes a 3.5 km distribution line, transformers, and supporting infrastructure. Consequently, it will improve Kafin Hausa’s access to reliable electricity. It is also the first of several mini-grids planned for towns such as Dutse, Hadejia, Kazaure, Ringim, and Gumel.
During the commissioning, Governor Namadi described the project as a milestone for Jigawa’s progress. He explained that it forms part of a wider plan to deploy 10 MW of solar-hybrid mini-grids across the state. Furthermore, he emphasised that the initiative supports President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which encourages states to generate their own power.
In addition, Governor Namadi recalled that Jigawa increased its stake in KEDCO to 10 per cent. As a result, the state now benefits from improved supply partnerships. He said the new project reflects one of the dividends of that investment.
The governor also highlighted Jigawa’s pioneering energy reforms. These include establishing the Ministry of Power and Energy, enacting the State Electricity Law 2024, and engaging with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA). Moreover, he revealed plans to deliver 100 MW of power under a public-private partnership.
Meanwhile, 21 additional mini-grid projects are underway in remote communities through the Nigerian Electrification Project (NEP). According to the governor, these projects will expand access to electricity and promote economic transformation.
With this solar mini-grid in Jigawa, the state is laying a strong foundation for sustainable growth and energy security.
