Brazil Seeks Full Membership in International Energy Agency

  • Brazil formally requested to start the accession process to become a full member of the International Energy Agency.
  • IEA chief Fatih Birol called Brazil a cornerstone of the global energy system, noting its growing role after record oil and gas output.

Brazil has formally requested to join the International Energy Agency (IEA) as a member country, the agency announced on Tuesday, September 2.

IEA confirmed that Brazilian government ministers submitted a letter to its Paris headquarters, asking to begin the accession process. Brazil currently holds an associate country status, while 32 nations enjoy full membership.

IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol said Brazil plays a central role in the global energy system. “Brazil is a cornerstone of the global energy system today, and its importance will only increase in the years ahead. We look forward to discussing next steps with Brazil and our member governments,” he stated.

Brazil’s request comes as the country’s oil and gas production reached record levels in July, further strengthening its profile as a key global energy player.
