US LNG Exports Hit Record High

  • US LNG exports hit 9.33 million metric tonnes in August, surpassing all previous monthly highs.
  • US LNG exports to Europe rose to 6.16 million tonnes, reflecting the continent’s growing dependence on American supplies.

US LNG exports reached the highest level on record in August, supported by increased plant output and steady European demand. The key phrase highlights America’s position as the world’s leading supplier of liquefied natural gas.

According to LSEG data, exports totalled 9.33 million metric tonnes in August. This figure surpassed April’s previous record of 9.25 million tonnes. It also improved on the 9.1 million tonnes shipped in July. Consequently, the US extended its dominance in the global LNG market.

Venture Global’s Plaquemines plant played a central role in this growth. It sold 1.6 million tonnes in August, accounting for 17 per cent of the country’s total. Although still under construction, Plaquemines is expected to operate all 18 trains by September, further lifting production and securing long-term export gains.

Europe remained the top destination for US LNG exports. In August, the continent received 6.16 million tonnes, or 66 per cent of the total, a rise from July’s 5.25 million tonnes. Reduced storage levels and balanced Asian demand encouraged European buyers to secure more American cargoes.

At the same time, US LNG exports to Asia declined. Deliveries fell to 1.47 million tonnes in August, down from 1.8 million tonnes in July. Prices also eased, as the Japan Korea Marker dropped to $11.63 per mmBtu.

Egypt continued to emerge as a key buyer, importing nine cargoes amounting to 0.57 million tonnes in August. Declining domestic production pushed Cairo to rely more heavily on foreign supplies. Meanwhile, exports to Latin America fell to 0.69 million tonnes, down from 1.03 million tonnes in July.

Ultimately, US LNG exports reflect the growing strategic importance of American energy. While Europe drives much of the demand, markets across Asia, Africa, and Latin America remain key players in future growth.
