Petronas Tightens Security at Sarawak LNG Plant in Malaysia

  • Malaysia’s National Security Council ordered heightened security at Petronas’ Sarawak LNG facilities following an unspecified threat.
  • Petronas said it is working with authorities, stressing that operations and supply remain unaffected while prioritising employee safety.

Malaysia’s state energy company Petronas said it cooperates with authorities after the National Security Council ordered tighter security at its LNG facilities in Bintulu, Sarawak, following an unspecified threat.

The council announced on Monday, September 8, that it had issued the directive to allow authorities to investigate the threat at the site, which houses Petronas’ flagship LNG complex.

Petronas confirmed the order and stressed that it is “working closely with the authorities to assess and address the situation.” The company added that the threat has not affected operations or disrupted supply.

“The safety of our employees and contractors remains our highest priority,” Petronas said.

The Bintulu LNG complex, one of the world’s largest, produces 29.3 million metric tons of liquefied natural gas annually and is a cornerstone of Malaysia’s energy exports.
