Failure to innovate offshore poses serious risks to the global oil and gas industry, according to Nigerian engineer Mike Ojumu. He stressed that without transformation in offshore mining, energy, telecommunications, and environmental monitoring, the industry could face significant disruption.
Ojumu emphasised that subsea robotic crawlers offer a lighter footprint on marine ecosystems. He urged their adoption as a sustainable solution to safeguard offshore operations and reduce environmental damage.
These crawlers integrate twin tracks for stability with quadrotor-inspired thrusters for manoeuvrability. This enables them to navigate rugged seabeds and withstand strong underwater currents. Equipped with advanced sensors and autonomous navigation systems, they adapt in real time to underwater environments.
Addressing reporters during a virtual briefing from South Africa, Ojumu explained that the crawler’s applications go well beyond seabed mining. In offshore energy, it can support cable trenching, pipeline inspection, and scour remediation around oil and gas platforms.
The failure to innovate offshore also carries implications for other industries. Telecommunications could benefit from rapid undersea cable repairs. Ports and waterways might use the crawler for dredging and debris clearance. Environmental agencies could employ it for seabed mapping, coral restoration, and ecological monitoring.
Ojumu, a Master’s graduate in Mechanical Engineering from Cape Peninsula University of Technology and now completing his PhD, described the crawler as a blend of robotics, drones, and subsea engineering in one platform. He highlighted that breakthroughs in power systems, autonomy, and robotics will soon allow underwater technologies to operate for longer periods, make smarter decisions, and reduce ecological impact.
Ojumu concluded that the industry’s future depends on embracing technologies that merge efficiency with environmental responsibility.
