Researcher Champions Sustainable Construction in Nigeria

  • Abdulkabir Bello has emerged as a leading voice for sustainable construction in Nigeria, championing resilient building practices that support climate goals.
  • He called on the industry to adopt recycled materials, modular systems, solar power, and passive designs to reduce waste and energy consumption.

Researcher Abdulkabir Bello has positioned himself at the forefront of Nigeria’s sustainable construction movement. He advocates a decisive shift toward eco-friendly and resilient building practices that advance global climate goals and national development priorities.

Bello, who earned a bachelor’s degree in building and a master’s degree in construction management from the Federal University of Technology, Minna, holds the distinction of publishing the highest number of studies on the circular economy in Nigeria’s construction sector. His research record has established him as a leading authority on embedding sustainability into the built environment.

“Sustainable construction is more than an approach; it is a responsibility we owe to our environment, communities, and future generations,” Bello stated.

Furthermore, he urged Nigeria to adopt practical innovations that cut energy use, minimise waste, and reduce environmental impact. He pointed to recycled materials, modular construction systems, solar integration, and passive building designs as solutions that already deliver environmental and economic benefits across the sector.

Bello identified persistent barriers, low public awareness, high costs of green materials, and limited technical expertise, but stressed that policymakers, industry stakeholders, and universities increasingly recognise sustainable construction as essential rather than optional.

He also emphasised his role in mentoring young professionals and strengthening collaboration between academia and industry, ensuring that research outputs translate into practical solutions for Nigeria’s construction landscape.
