Governor Radda Rolls Out Solar, Hydro, EVs in Kastina

  • Governor Radda commissions over 20MW of solar power, a revived 10MW wind farm hybridised with solar, and new CNG and hydro projects in Kastina.
  • The state launches clean mobility, youth training, and green economic initiatives to boost jobs, health, and sustainable development.

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda of Katsina State commissioned a series of renewable energy projects on Tuesday, September 23, underscoring his administration’s commitment to clean, reliable, and affordable power.

At the ceremony, Governor Radda described the projects as a bold step toward transforming the state’s energy sector and creating new growth opportunities. He noted that his administration’s blueprint, anchored on prudence, discipline, and transparency, yields tangible results in under three years.

“In line with Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060, Katsina State has made remarkable progress. Furthermore, we are deploying over 20 megawatts of solar power across hospitals, schools, and water facilities with 10 megawatt-hours of battery storage. This means better health services, brighter classrooms, and clean water for our communities,” Radda said.

The Governor revived the long-stalled 10MW Lambar Rimi Wind Farm, now owned by the state government, and hybridised it with an additional 10MW solar power. He also provided counterpart funding for a 1MW mini-hydro system at Danja Dam in partnership with the French Treasury and Ocean Énergie.

Furthermore, the construction of Katsina’s first Liquefied and Compressed Natural Gas (LNG/CNG) station is over 90 per cent complete, promising cheaper, cleaner fuel for transporters and industries.

Meanwhile, government institutions now benefit from renewable power. A 1MW solar plant supplies the State Secretariat complex, while another powers General Muhammadu Buhari House, reducing reliance on diesel generators. At Katsina General Hospital, a 300KW solar system now drives critical services, improving patient care.

In addition, the state is installing solar-powered streetlights at Tsangaya and Islamiyya schools to support education and safety. Governor Radda inspected the nearly completed Greenville CNG Station and unveiled 500 electric tricycles to promote cleaner urban mobility.

In youth empowerment, 120 young men and women are training in solar installation and maintenance at the Technology Incubation Centre, preparing a skilled workforce to sustain Katsina’s clean-energy drive. Governor Radda also announced plans for a Green Economic Zone powered entirely by renewable energy and stand-alone solar systems for MSMEs to boost entrepreneurship and job creation.

“These projects show that Katsina is not waiting for the future; we are building it today. In three years, we have achieved what once seemed impossible,” he said, dedicating the progress to the resilience of the people, the commitment of civil servants, support from development partners, and the blessings of Almighty Allah.

In conclusion, Hafiz Ibrahim Ahmed, Special Adviser to the Governor on Power and Energy, described the day as historic, noting that the solar, wind, hydro, and clean mobility projects reflect a broader story of energy security, economic resilience, and environmental responsibility.
