MESL, Granville Energy to Develop 100MW Solar Plant in Niger

  • MESL and Granville Energy signed an MoU to design, build, finance, and operate a 100MW floating solar plant at Kainji Hydropower Plant in Niger State.
  • The project will complement hydro capacity, supply clean power to thousands of homes and businesses, and advance Nigeria’s renewable energy transition.

Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited (MESL), operator of Nigeria’s largest hydropower plants, partnered with Granville Energy (PTY) Limited to deliver the country’s first 100-megawatt floating solar power project at the Kainji Hydropower Plant in Niger State.

The partners will design, build, finance, and operate the plant, which will enhance Kainji’s hydroelectric output, diversify Nigeria’s energy mix, and cut dependence on fossil fuels. The initiative also supports the Federal Government’s renewable energy agenda.

Meanwhile, at the MoU signing ceremony in Abuja, MESL Board Chairman Col. Sani Bello (rtd) described the project as a milestone in transforming Nigeria’s energy landscape.

“This pioneer project embodies our unwavering commitment to increasing power generation in Nigeria while promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions. When fully operational, the project will provide thousands of Nigerian homes and businesses with clean, reliable energy, supporting economic development while minimising environmental impact,” Bello said.

Furthermore, he stressed that MESL’s partnership with Granville Energy underscores the company’s long-term dedication to renewable energy and corporate social responsibility. He added that the floating solar facility will prove how solar and hydro technologies can operate together to deliver affordable power and strengthen national energy security.

In a press statement, MESL’s Managing Director emphasised the project’s strategic value. He said the plant will use solar energy to complement hydro generation at Kainji, boosting efficiency and ensuring more reliable electricity for consumers.

The 100MW floating solar project will serve as a model for future renewable energy ventures in Nigeria, especially as the country works to diversify generation sources and cut greenhouse gas emissions.

MESL currently operates the Kainji and Jebba hydropower stations, which supply a significant share of Nigeria’s electricity. By launching this solar initiative with Granville Energy, MESL aims to reinforce its role as a leading driver of Nigeria’s energy transition.
