Nigeria avoids energy disruption as Dangote Refinery resolves its dispute with the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN). The resolution followed government-led mediation, which restored stability in Africa’s largest energy market. The settlement ensures continued energy security while protecting workers’ rights.
The disagreement stemmed from allegations that Dangote Refinery dismissed hundreds of unionised workers. As a result, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) launched a strike. The action threatened to destabilise fuel supplies and disrupt the economy.
However, the Ministry of Labour quickly intervened. After intense negotiations, it announced that PENGASSAN agreed to call off its strike. According to the ministry, unionisation is a legal right of workers in Nigeria and must be respected.
The agreement included redeploying disengaged staff to other Dangote Group companies without any loss of pay. Notably, both parties agreed that no worker would face victimisation for their role in the dispute. This compromise preserved jobs, restored calm, and ensured operations continued smoothly.
The first round of talks had ended in a deadlock. In contrast, the second phase brought together senior government officials, including the Ministers of Labour, Finance, and Budget, as well as the National Security Adviser and security chiefs. Their involvement underscored the urgency of resolving the crisis.
In the end, a nine-hour dialogue produced results. The settlement addressed union concerns and highlighted the government’s role in protecting industrial harmony. Furthermore, it demonstrated that collaborative dialogue can resolve disputes without prolonged disruption.
