Seplat Energy Commits to Expand Nigeria’s Domestic Gas Market

  • Seplat Energy is investing heavily in domestic gas processing, including the ANOH gas plant, set to come on stream before the end of 2025.
  • The company plans to expand LPG and CNG supply to boost energy access, support industries, and promote cleaner cooking and transport across Nigeria.

Seplat Energy Plc has reaffirmed its commitment to developing Nigeria’s domestic gas market, describing gas as the engine of prosperity for Nigeria and Africa, powering homes, fuelling industries, and providing a cleaner alternative for cooking and transport.

The company’s Director of New Energy, Mr Okechukwu Mba, made this known during a panel session at the 2025 Africa Energy Week (AEW) in Cape Town, South Africa. Speaking on the theme “Beyond Exports: Developing Commercially Viable Domestic Gas Markets,” Mba stressed the need for stakeholders to address challenges across the gas-to-power value chain, from gas production to electricity supply, to achieve reliable power for Nigerians.

He highlighted the importance of a commercially viable power sector to stimulate growth in the domestic gas market. “Bankable anchor customers are needed to underpin the development of new gas projects,” Mba said, identifying transmission and distribution bottlenecks and liquidity crises in the power sector as critical barriers that must be resolved to unlock new investments.

Furthermore, Mba noted that Seplat Energy supplies gas to five power stations in Nigeria, underscoring the company’s commitment to strengthening the power sector. He said gas remains well-suited to provide reliable and affordable base load energy essential for economic growth.

Beyond pipeline gas projects, Seplat Energy is investing in Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) facilities to expand clean energy access. The company already supplies significant volumes of butane from its NGL plant at the Bonny River Terminal. It plans to begin LPG deliveries from its Sapele and ANOH gas plants before year-end.

According to Mba, these efforts will position Seplat Energy as one of Nigeria’s leading LPG suppliers, helping to displace biomass and promote cleaner cooking solutions that improve public health and living conditions.

He added that Seplat Energy’s investments in CNG aim to extend gas availability to customers not yet connected to the national gas pipeline network, ensuring broader energy inclusion.
