China Opposes US Sanctions Over Iran Oil Trade

  • The response to US sanctions demonstrates its resolve to protect energy security and maintain stable international trade relations.

China has vowed to take firm action in response to new United States sanctions linked to Iran’s oil trade. The Chinese government said it would act swiftly to defend the legitimate interests of its companies and citizens affected by the restrictions.

At a press briefing on Friday, October 10, 2025, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun criticised Washington’s decision. He urged the United States to “immediately stop relying on unilateral sanctions.” Guo said China would continue to uphold fairness in global trade while protecting its energy security and national interests.

The United States announced the new sanctions earlier in the week. They target around 100 individuals, entities, and vessels accused of facilitating Iran’s oil and petrochemical trade. Among them are a Chinese independent refinery and a shipping terminal that is said to be processing Iranian crude oil.

According to the US Treasury Department, the move forms part of a broader plan to pressure Tehran and restrict its oil revenues. However, China has firmly rejected these measures. Officials say they disrupt global energy stability and breach international law.

Beijing maintains that its trade with Iran is transparent and lawful. The Chinese government insists that cooperation between sovereign nations should remain free from outside interference. It also argues that dialogue and diplomacy are the best ways to resolve issues linked to Iran’s nuclear programme and related sanctions.

Guo reaffirmed that China would “safeguard the normal operations” of its enterprises and ensure that energy imports remain steady and uninterrupted. He added that such sanctions “serve no useful purpose” and could heighten tensions in global energy markets.

In conclusion, China’s response to US sanctions highlights its growing confidence in protecting its economic sovereignty. As tensions rise, Beijing’s call for restraint and dialogue signals its desire to balance diplomacy with firm national action.
