- Katsina State launched 30 hybrid-electric buses to modernise transport and cut emissions, aligning with Governor Dikko Radda’s sustainability agenda.
- The Woerka–Ben 10–Zhong Tong partnership will build three terminals and 60 bus stops in six months.
The Katsina State Government has unveiled a fleet of hybrid-electric buses, marking a significant step in Governor Dikko Radda’s plan to modernise public transport and promote environmental sustainability across the state. A hybrid-electric bus operates with an electric motor and a smaller internal combustion engine, combining fuel efficiency with reduced emissions.
The initiative follows Governor Radda’s visit to China last year, where he led a delegation to secure partnerships with leading equipment manufacturers.
Meanwhile, at the unveiling ceremony held at Woerka Nigeria Limited’s facility in Abuja, Oshi Benard, President of Ben 10 Equipment Company and a key project partner, praised the governor’s leadership. “Governor Radda is hard-working, industrious, and focused,” Benard said. “This project reflects his passion for improving the lives of citizens and empowering youth in Katsina State. We want to thank him for giving us the opportunity to deliver a world-class transport initiative.”
Benard also mentioned that the new buses, which run on fuel and electricity, will reduce carbon emissions, lower fuel costs, and improve urban mobility in Katsina, Daura, and Funtua. Plans are to expand across states in the future.
In addition, Wei Yanbin, Project Manager at Zhong Tong Bus, said the government will acquire 30 city buses in the project’s first phase and construct three bus terminals and 60 bus stops along designated routes. “The project will commence in October and be completed within six months,” Yanbin said.
Furthermore, he explained that the hybrid system allows the buses to alternate between diesel and electric power, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Each bus can carry 45 to 55 passengers.
State officials said the initiative aligns with Governor Radda’s vision to provide a safe, affordable, and eco-friendly transport network that meets the mobility needs of Katsina’s growing population.
