Bayero University Kano (BUK) has commissioned ten solar-powered tricycles to improve campus transportation, marking a significant step toward sustainable mobility and environmental conservation.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Haruna Musa, described the project as a landmark achievement that reflects the University’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.

In addition, he explained that the eco-friendly initiative forms part of BUK’s efforts to integrate renewable energy solutions into its daily operations. The project aligns with the federal government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and has received support from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

“The introduction of these solar-powered tricycles makes Bayero University, Kano, a trailblazer in promoting green innovation and sustainable transportation within Nigeria’s higher education sector,” Professor Musa said.

He added, “Today, we are delighted to receive ten solar-powered tricycles that will operate within the University to ease transportation challenges for our students and staff. We are also expecting an additional ten soon. With eight petrol-powered tricycles already in operation, twenty-eight will soon serve our community.”

The Vice Chancellor emphasised that the solar tricycles would improve mobility for students and staff and help reduce the University’s carbon footprint. He urged users to treat the vehicles responsibly and view them as a shared asset for the entire BUK community.

Top management officials attended the commissioning, including Deputy Vice Chancellors Professor Aliyu Muazu and Professor Amina Mustapha, the Registrar Malam Haruna Aliyu, the Bursar Malam Rabi’u Dauda, and the University Librarian Dr Kabiru Dahiru Abbas.
