Genesis Energy, NNPC Collaborate to Boost Energy Access

  • Genesis Energy and NNPC will supply excess power from PHRC’s 84MW clean plant to Nigeria’s grid, advancing industrial growth and energy transition.
  • The pilot project could expand to 120MW, showcasing public-private collaboration to boost grid reliability and sustainability.

Genesis Energy has announced a strategic partnership with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) to channel excess power from the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC) into Nigeria’s national grid, boosting industrial productivity and advancing energy transition.

The pan-African clean energy company said the collaboration aligns with its mission to drive sustainable industrialisation and strengthen energy infrastructure across Nigeria. The announcement came during a visit by Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu to Genesis Energy’s 84MW off-grid clean power plant located within the Port Harcourt Refinery in Eleme, Rivers State, Nigeria’s largest licensed private off-grid facility.

Adelabu praised Genesis Energy’s operational performance and reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to enabling private-sector participation in the power sector. He also said partnerships like the Genesis–NNPC collaboration were crucial to bridging infrastructure gaps and ensuring reliable electricity for industries, businesses, and households.

“The government cannot fund the energy sector alone,” Adelabu said. “We are creating a consistent regulatory environment that gives investors confidence to recover their investments while supporting national growth.”

Furthermore, he mentioned that the initiative would serve as a proof of concept for integrating excess capacity into the national grid, with a potential 120MW expansion once the pilot phase concludes. The minister also pledged to accelerate transmission and commercial arrangements to ensure seamless power evacuation from the PHRC facility.

Genesis Energy Chairman and Chief Executive Akinwole Omoboriowo said the partnership reflects the company’s vision of powering Nigeria’s industrial and economic advancement through clean, reliable energy.

“At Genesis Energy, we are committed to powering progress through strategic collaborations that expand access to dependable power,” Omoboriowo said. “Our partnership with NNPC Limited enables excess power supply from our PHRC facility to the national grid, a milestone in Nigeria’s journey toward stable electricity supply.”

The PHRC facility, powered by three GE TM2500+ gas turbines, provides uninterrupted, sustainable power to the refinery, enhancing operational efficiency and reducing reliance on diesel. Genesis Energy said the project demonstrates how gas-to-power solutions enable renewable expansion, supporting Nigeria’s Just Energy Transition and Climate Resilience Agenda.

In addition, Omoboriowo described the initiative as “pragmatic innovation,” leveraging existing assets to enhance refinery productivity, create jobs, and boost local energy security.

“This project goes beyond megawatts; it is powering industries, communities, and livelihoods,” he said. “It represents a key milestone in Nigeria’s effort to build a reliable, efficient, and sustainable power ecosystem.”

He added that Genesis Energy would continue partnering with the government, financiers, and global stakeholders to drive industrial growth, support clean energy goals, and advance Nigeria’s long-term energy security.
