A major Nigerian CNG expansion is underway as the government plans to open 500 new Compressed Natural Gas refuelling stations. The initiative will use a government-backed Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to improve access to cleaner, more affordable fuel. It will also reduce congestion at existing CNG stations and support sustainable energy use.
The Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF) recently concluded talks with Chinese manufacturer Endurance Group to supply the 500 stations. According to Mr Oluwole Adama, Executive Director of MDGIF, the collaboration includes MDGIF, Bank of Industry, Endurance Group, and Séquor Investment Partners. He explained that the SPV, known as the Compressed Natural Gas Auto Mobility Infrastructure Company (CAM InfraCo), will deploy the stations and construct related gas supply infrastructure.
Adama added that the project will include CNG and LNG trucks with truck-mounted cascades. This system will create a virtual pipeline across all states. Consequently, logistics will improve, fuel supply will be more consistent, and queues at existing stations will reduce.
Mr Oluwatoyin Subair, Senior Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties, said the project aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s vision. It will deepen CNG usage and reduce reliance on petrol and diesel. In addition, the project will generate jobs and stimulate Nigeria’s domestic gas sector.
Endurance Group CEO Eric Lin stated that the SPV aims to establish a nationwide ecosystem for CNG refuelling, maintenance, and logistics. Its leasing strategy allows certified operators to expand services while ensuring reliable fuel delivery. Moreover, the plan targets northern corridors and growing southern regions. It will leverage existing hubs and planned infrastructure to guarantee cost-effective and sustainable expansion.
