Nigeria, China Strengthen Renewable Energy Cooperation

  • ECN and China strengthen collaboration to advance renewable energy planning.
  • Pilot states improve data management and energy coordination through SEPI Units.

Nigeria has renewed its commitment to renewable energy cooperation. The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) is also deepening its technical engagement with China. The initiative followed a review meeting between the National Energy Masterplan Implementation Committee (NEMIC) and the Nigeria–China Renewable Energy Research Centre (NCREC) in Abuja.

It highlights Nigeria’s aim to strengthen state-level planning. It also improves the implementation of national energy policies. Consequently, renewable energy partnerships remain central to sustainable development.

Dr Mustapha Abdullahi, ECN Director-General and Chair of NEMIC, received updates from four pilot states: Lagos, Kogi, Kwara and Kano. Each state has established a State Energy Planning and Implementation (SEPI) Unit. These units now manage energy mapping, data collection, and local project coordination. As a result, planning across states is becoming more accurate and consistent.

During the session, Dr Mustapha presented the National Energy Master Plan and the National Energy Policy to the NEMIC and NCREC teams. He explained that both documents guide implementation. He added that alignment between national and state structures will strengthen Nigeria’s energy transition. Strong coordination, he stressed, will ensure smoother operations.

Mrs Feng Yanhong, Chief Engineer of NCREC, highlighted improvements in the pilot states. She noted that data management, resource assessment, and infrastructure planning have advanced. Such progress, she said, demonstrates the strength of Nigeria–China technical collaboration.

Dr Mustapha praised the achievements so far. He emphasised that state-level planning is critical for long-term energy goals. He also said enhanced SEPI capacity will accelerate nationwide progress.

The meeting outlined the next steps. These include further training for state officers, additional technical support from NCREC, and plans to expand SEPI implementation to more states in 2026. NEMIC and NCREC reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Nigeria’s energy transition and bilateral cooperation.

This renewed partnership strengthens confidence in Nigeria’s clean energy ambitions. It shows how coordinated planning can transform energy systems at the state level.
