Genesis Energy Drives Nigeria’s Clean Energy Revolution

  • Genesis Energy leverages private capital and partnerships to drive Nigeria’s energy transformation.
  • Policy clarity, as outlined in the Electricity Act 2023, fosters sub-national projects and enhances investor confidence.

Genesis Energy Group, a leading pan-African clean energy infrastructure and asset management company, has reaffirmed its commitment to Nigeria’s energy transformation.

Furthermore, through private-sector investment and strategic partnerships, the company aims to deliver clean, reliable, and sustainable electricity nationwide. Consequently, this approach shows how policy clarity and execution can unlock tangible progress in the sector.

The announcement was made at the 2025 Nigeria Energy Leadership Summit, held at the Landmark Centre in Lagos. As Headline Sponsor, Genesis Energy joined policymakers, financiers, and industry leaders to discuss sustainable electricity supply. Moreover, the summit theme, “Powering Nigeria through Investment, Innovation and Partnership,” emphasised collaboration as a key driver of change.

In his keynote address, Chairman and CEO Akinwole Omoboriowo II emphasised the importance of policy reform and market efficiency in driving Nigeria’s energy transformation. He explained that the Electricity Act 2023 provides a clear framework for sector growth.

Therefore, sub-national governments can establish local electricity markets. They can also develop off-grid and mini-grid projects legally. As a result, this policy clarity restores investor confidence and encourages competition. These reforms form the basis of NESI 2.0, a decentralised energy system built on private capital and shared ambition.

Omoboriowo also cited Genesis Energy’s investments as proof of progress. For example, the company signed a $500 million Memorandum of Understanding with Katsina State Government to deploy large-scale solar photovoltaic and battery storage systems. Consequently, the first phase of the project powers the Katsina State General Hospital entirely through solar and battery systems.

Likewise, the State Government Complex now operates on a hybridised model, ensuring uninterrupted electricity. These initiatives save over ₦3 billion annually, strengthen local economies, create employment opportunities, and enhance social infrastructure.

Honourable Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, further emphasised the importance of public-private partnerships for sector growth. In particular, he highlighted state-level autonomy, encouraging the generation, transmission, distribution, and development of off-grid solutions. Additionally, collaboration with companies like Genesis Energy can deliver expertise and technology. This approach guarantees energy security and fosters local economic growth.

Organised by Informa Markets under the Federal Ministry of Power, the Nigeria Energy Leadership Summit provides a platform for high-level dialogue on investment, innovation, and sustainability. Consequently, attendees explored strategies to expand electricity access, accelerate the adoption of clean energy, and achieve a diversified energy mix across Nigeria by 2030.
