Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has selected Honeywell to deliver advanced technologies, catalysts, and equipment that support a significant increase in output. The refinery is located in Lekki and already stands as Africa’s largest integrated complex. The partnership will enable the facility to process a broader range of crude varieties, and it will also enhance efficiency across several key units.
Because of these upgrades, Dangote plans to increase its refining capacity from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2028. This target will place the complex among the biggest global refineries. The expansion also aims to reduce import dependence, thereby strengthening energy stability across West Africa.
Aliko Dangote explained that the partnership carries significant value for Nigeria’s economic advancement. He noted that Honeywell’s solutions will help the refinery set new performance standards and support national energy goals. Honeywell has worked with the refinery for nearly a decade, and this experience enables both parties to accelerate timelines while enhancing returns.
Honeywell UOP President Rajesh Gattupalli stated that the company remains committed to supporting Africa’s rising energy demand. He added that shared innovation will create long-term gains for the region.
Dangote will also license Honeywell’s Oleflex technology. This process converts propane into propylene through a catalytic dehydrogenation process. The refinery will produce 750,000 metric tonnes of propylene yearly through this system. As a result, total polypropylene output will reach 2.4 million metric tonnes each year. The material supports key industries, including packaging, manufacturing, and consumer goods.
The project strengthens Nigeria’s ambition to lead Africa’s fuel and petrochemical markets. The Lekki plant already produces Euro-V standard fuels, and it remains the world’s largest single-train refinery. Honeywell’s century-long experience in global energy systems further enhances its credibility in supporting this transformation.
