EWE NETZ Invests €26m to Strengthen Power Grids in Germany

  • EWE NETZ is expanding substations and reinforcing lines with new transformers and support cables to accommodate growing renewable feed-ins and future electrification needs.
  • The €26 million investment by 2028 enhances grid stability, supports decentralised generation, and advances theclimate-neutral energy transition in northern Emsland.

EWE NETZ, a subsidiary of the EWE Group, is investing over €26 million to upgrade and expand the power grid in Emsland. The company aims to secure a reliable energy supply and support the energy transition in rural areas.

The investment focuses on upgrading substations in Haselünne and Esterwegen. The company will equip each substation with a third 63 MVA transformer to handle rising feed-in from renewable sources and improve long-term supply stability.

EWE NETZ will also reinforce key power lines. In Haselünne, the company will install new 400 mm² support cables to the Westerlohmühlen switchgear and 630 mm² cables to Herzlake. In Esterwegen, it will add a new 110 kV double busbar and extend lines and support cables to Rastdorf, Bockhorst, and Börgerwald.

“These projects in Haselünne and Esterwegen create grid capacity for current needs while laying the foundation for future growth,” said Ralf Kuper, EWE NETZ Regional Manager for Cloppenburg/Emsland. Furthermore, he stated that the upgrades will support new feed-in and electrification in households, commerce, and agriculture.

The company is also investing in new line routes, local network stations, and underground infrastructure across northern Emsland, including Bockhorst, Surwold, and Esterwegen. These measures will also enable more decentralised power generation and support the shift to climate-neutral energy.

EWE NETZ plans to complete the €26 million investment by 2028. The company aims to strengthen grid stability and advance Germany’s energy transition in the Emsland region.
