Elgin Invests €150m in Dual Agrivoltaic Projects Across Italy

  • Elgin will build two agrivoltaic plants in Sicily and Lombardy with a combined capacity of over 190 MW and an investment value of €150 million.
  • The projects integrate solar generation with active farming, using digital controls and land-management systems to meet Italy’s latest agrivoltaic standards.

Elgin has announced plans to develop two major agrivoltaic plants in Sicily and Lombardy. The total capacity will exceed 190 MW, and the projects together are valued at €150 million.

In Sicily, Elgin plans to build a 30 MW elevated agrivoltaic plant. It will also install a 30 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The facility will allow renewable electricity generation while supporting agricultural activity below the panels.

In Lombardy, the company proposes a 130 MW agrivoltaic project on rice fields. According to Elgin, the plant will utilise digital control systems and advanced land management techniques. As a result, the project will strike a balance between energy production, protect ecosystems, and maintain agricultural continuity. It will also align with Italy’s latest agrivoltaic guidelines.

Furthermore, Elgin noted that these projects form a key part of its Italian expansion strategy. The company, which sold a majority stake to Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) in 2024, aims to develop more than 3 GW of projects in Italy by 2030.

CEO Dermot Kelleher said, “These two plants mark an important milestone in Elgin’s strategy in Italy, where we aim to develop over 3 GW of projects by 2030.”
