German energy group RWE AG has put on stream its repowered Mual wind farm in the Spanish region of Aragon, a site that was upgraded to operate at a capacity of 20 MW.

The repowering initiative was completed in eight months, RWE said on Wednesday. The German firm received funding for the project from the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility.

Located near Zaragoza, the Mual wind park was disconnected from the grid in April after 27 years of operations. Previously, the plant utilised 27 Nordtank 600 kW turbines, totalling 16.2 MW, and generated electricity for approximately 9,400 households per year.

The old hardware was replaced with three new Nordex N163/6.X turbines, the output of which is expected to be enough to cover the electricity demand of roughly 21,000 local homes.

The upgraded facility will be operated under a power purchase agreement (PPA) with an undisclosed off-taker.

The Mual project has now been certified by Bureau Veritas as ZeroWaste, as 99.85 per cent of the materials from the old wind farm were recovered or recycled.

RWE explained that 1,350 components will be refurbished and subsequently used in its wind projects, while the 81 blades will be recycled and their components will be recovered as fibreglass and resins for reuse in various sectors.

At present, RWE Renewables Iberia operates 18 onshore wind farms with a combined capacity of around 500 MW, plus seven solar farms totalling roughly 300 MWac.
