The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has unveiled a five-year strategic roadmap designed to enhance energy security, expand natural gas utilisation and improve infrastructure. The initiative reflects the Authority’s renewed push to strengthen regulatory performance under its new leadership.
The Authority Chief Executive, Engr. Saidu Mohammed announced the plan during his first town hall meeting with staff. He outlined a vision for a “new era of regulatory excellence” anchored on collaboration, accountability and institutional performance. He emphasised NMDPRA’s role as a key enabler of energy supply for industries, businesses and households. According to him, effective regulation remains central to national development and economic growth.
Furthermore, Mohammed expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for the confidence placed in his administration. He also acknowledged the contributions of the Authority’s pioneer leadership and workforce in laying strong foundations over the past four years.
On internal operations, Mohammed said management will promote teamwork, sound corporate governance and discipline across the organisation. Additionally, he emphasised that rewards and sanctions will be implemented to enhance productivity and reform the institutional culture. He added that the 2026 work year will require hard work and a visible impact.
Reaffirming the Authority’s mandate under the Petroleum Industry Act, Mohammed highlighted regulatory priorities for the coming years. These include strengthening energy security, driving infrastructure development, expanding natural gas utilisation, promoting competition, protecting consumers and supporting industry sustainability.
He also disclosed that the Authority will prioritise four strategic areas over the next five years. First, it will position NMDPRA as a best-in-class regulator through increased automation of processes and the attainment of ISO certification. Second, it will ensure a secure and sustainable energy supply for the country. Third, it will expand natural gas utilisation in line with Nigeria’s Decade of Gas initiative and broader economic objectives. Finally, it will position Nigeria as Africa’s energy hub by strengthening the midstream and downstream segments of the petroleum sector.
Additionally, Mohammed stated that the strategic direction will require a commitment from staff at all levels. He noted that regulatory excellence demands professionalism, collective effort and adherence to global best practices. He assured stakeholders that the Authority remains committed to transparent and predictable regulation that supports investment, protects consumers and creates long-term economic value.
