  • Baghdad aims to lift generation to 57,000MW and end gas flaring by 2028 through international partnerships.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani inaugurated the 11th Iraq Energy Exhibition and Conference on Saturday, January 10, calling for expanded international cooperation to strengthen the country’s energy sector.

The three-day event gathered more than 450 companies from over 16 countries and regions. The Prime Minister described Iraq as a promising market with significant opportunities in energy development.

Al-Sudani reaffirmed the government’s strategic commitment to both conventional and renewable energy. He stated that the Ministry of Electricity is pursuing an ambitious programme to expand installed power capacity to more than 57,000 megawatts through cooperation with Siemens and General Electric.

The Prime Minister highlighted progress in reducing gas flaring. He reported that reduction rates have exceeded 72 per cent and confirmed a national target for complete elimination by the end of 2028.

He added that Iraq is implementing a comprehensive plan to deploy renewable energy at district and sub-district levels, with execution expected to begin in the coming summer.

Al-Sudani also noted increased production from major oil projects through partnerships with leading international companies, including TotalEnergies and BP, while maintaining dialogue with ExxonMobil and Chevron.

Iraq’s economy continues to rely heavily on crude oil exports, which account for roughly 90 per cent of national revenues.
