Mission Innovation to Establish Secretariat at IEA Headquarters in Paris

  • Mission Innovation’s 24 member governments approved the relocation of its Secretariat to the International Energy Agency (IEA) headquarters.
  • The decision enables both organisations to accelerate advanced energy technology development globally.

Mission Innovation’s 24 member governments have approved the creation of its Secretariat at the International Energy Agency headquarters in Paris. The move strengthens cooperation between the two organisations and expands Mission Innovation’s capacity to accelerate development of advanced energy technologies.

Meanwhile, the IEA will host the Secretariat and support its work to mobilise investment in research, development and demonstration of next-generation energy technologies. Member governments of both Mission Innovation and the IEA endorsed the decision.

Mission Innovation launched in 2015 to make advanced clean energy technologies affordable and accessible. The initiative convenes annually at the Ministerial level and brings together governments and partner organisations to steer innovation priorities.

Furthermore, Members include Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Denmark, the European Commission, Finland, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, Morocco, the Netherlands, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States.

IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol welcomed the decision. He also stated that the partnership will strengthen international cooperation on energy technologies and support efforts to make global energy systems more secure, affordable, and sustainable.
