MAN, UNIDO Lead Push for Energy-Efficient Manufacturing

  • Industrial stakeholders are calling for wider adoption of energy-efficient and cleaner production practices to strengthen Nigeria’s manufacturing sector.
  • The push aims to reduce production costs, improve competitiveness, and support environmental sustainability.

Industrial leaders are pushing harder for factories in Nigeria to use less energy and adopt cleaner production methods. They believe this will lower production costs and make local industries stronger and more competitive.

Stakeholders raised this position during a policy dialogue held in Kano. The session brought together government officials, regulators, manufacturers, financiers, and development partners to review progress on an industrial energy efficiency and cleaner production programme.

Industry representatives said many factories still struggle with high energy costs and inefficient processes. They stressed that modern, energy-saving equipment can cut operating expenses while also reducing environmental impact.

They also encouraged stronger cooperation between the public and private sectors. According to them, better partnerships will speed up the adoption of efficient technologies and improve industrial productivity.

Development partners explained that the programme helps companies track and manage their energy use more effectively. They urged manufacturers, especially in Northern Nigeria, to take advantage of the technical support and training available.

Project experts noted that the initiative focuses on key industrial sectors such as steel, food processing, textiles, furniture production, and petroleum-related manufacturing. They said improving energy use in these sectors can deliver large economic and environmental benefits.

They added that the programme also promotes better use of raw materials, water, and chemicals. This approach helps industries reduce waste while improving output and profitability.

Experts said energy efficiency can help manufacturers manage unstable electricity supply. Some companies are already combining efficiency measures with renewable energy solutions to reduce dependence on the grid.

Financial support is also available to help companies upgrade equipment and improve efficiency. The funding is designed to make it easier for businesses to invest in cleaner and more modern production systems.

Early results show that some manufacturers have already reduced emissions and energy consumption significantly. Many have also improved profit margins and compliance with environmental standards.

Stakeholders concluded that cleaner and more efficient manufacturing will help Nigeria strengthen its industrial base. They also said it will support climate goals and help local companies compete globally.
