Power Outage Hits South-East After System Collapse

  • The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company confirmed a system collapse at 11:54 a.m., leaving consumers across the South-East without power.
  • The cause is yet to be determined, with restoration efforts ongoing amid continued concerns over grid instability.

Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has confirmed that a partial system collapse occurred at about 11:54 a.m. The incident triggered widespread power outages across the South-East.

The blackout affected customers in Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, and Imo states. As a result, residential, commercial, and industrial activities suffered disruptions.

EEDC’s Group Head of Corporate Communications, Emeka Ezeh, said the collapse affected all subsidiary providers under the company. He explained that the outage impacted customers served by MainPower, TransPower, FirstPower, NewEra, and EastLand.

Ezeh stated that officials have not yet identified the immediate cause of the collapse. However, the company continues to engage with relevant authorities to restore supply as quickly as possible.

The incident adds to ongoing concerns about grid instability in Nigeria’s power sector. Earlier on Thursday, Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company also reported a loss of supply from the national grid.

Frequent grid disturbances continue to disrupt businesses, especially in major industrial hubs such as Aba and Onitsha. Many manufacturers now rely heavily on diesel and alternative energy sources because of unreliable public supply.

As of the time of this report, electricity had not yet been restored in the affected states.
