GIZ, NEMSA Deepen Partnership on Solar Mini-Grid Standards

  • German Development Cooperation and NEMSA have reaffirmed collaboration on renewable energy regulation and capacity building.
  • The partnership includes the rollout of guidelines for inspecting and certifying solar mini-grids in Nigeria.

The German Development Cooperation, implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) under the Nigerian Energy Support Programme, has paid a courtesy visit to the headquarters of the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) in Abuja. The visit aimed to strengthen collaboration on renewable energy development and regulatory standards.

The meeting, held on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, focused on expanding cooperation in renewable energy deployment, regulatory compliance and capacity building within Nigeria’s electricity sector.

Milot Karid, who led the GIZ delegation, congratulated NEMSA’s management and reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to sustaining its long-standing partnership with the agency.

Meanwhile, Karid noted that the collaboration has produced key outcomes. These include the development of guidelines for inspecting and certifying solar mini-grids in Nigeria. The framework also  aims to strengthen safety, quality assurance and regulatory compliance across the country’s expanding off-grid renewable energy sector.

In addition, he mentioned that the partnership has also supported targeted training programmes for NEMSA personnel. These initiatives have enhanced the agency’s technical capacity to enforce safety standards in renewable energy installations nationwide.

Olusegun Adesayo, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NEMSA, received the delegation. He also serves as Chief Electrical Inspector of the Federation.

Adesayo reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to electrical safety and regulatory compliance within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry. He thanked GIZ and the European Union for supporting Nigeria’s power sector.

Furthermore, both organisations also plan to deepen cooperation in renewable energy deployment. The partnership will extend to energy efficiency programmes and rural electrification projects.

The Nigerian Energy Support Programme is a technical assistance initiative jointly funded by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. GIZ implements the programme in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Power Nigeria.

Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions, strengthening renewable energy standards and supporting Nigeria’s transition toward a safer, more efficient and sustainable electricity sector.
