Jantzen Advances Battery Project in Romania

  • Jantzen Renewables has secured all permits for the 360MW Repono1 battery energy storage project in southern Romania.
  • The facility will increase the country’s current grid-scale battery storage capacity by about 50 per cent.

Jantzen Renewables has secured all building permits for the Repono1 battery energy storage project. The approval allows the company to move the project to the ready-to-build stage.

The project will deliver a 360-megawatt battery energy storage system (BESS) in Blejești, Teleorman County, near Bucharest. The developer said the project will support Romania’s growing renewable energy sector. Battery storage systems help balance electricity supply and demand as renewable generation increases.

“As renewable energy generation continues to expand, energy storage solutions such as Repono1 provide the flexibility needed to balance supply and demand,” the company said.

The company added that the project will strengthen Romania’s electricity system and accelerate the transition to cleaner energy.

Jantzen Renewables started operations in 2020 after spinning out from Jantzen Development, which operates under the Jantzen Group. The company currently develops a renewable energy pipeline of more than 2 gigawatts across Romania. The pipeline includes solar, wind, and battery storage projects.

The Repono1 facility will increase Romania’s grid-scale battery storage capacity by at least 50 percent when operations begin.

Developers across Romania also continue to advance new battery storage projects. These projects have a combined capacity of nearly 1 gigawatt.

Romania now expects to reach about 2 gigawatts of battery storage capacity before the end of the year. This growth reflects rapid expansion in the country’s energy storage sector.

Meanwhile, Jantzen Renewables continues to develop the Repono2 battery project pipeline. The pipeline includes several battery units with capacities between 13MWh and 15MWh. The company plans to install these systems in southern Romania and the Transylvania region.

The company also develops large-scale solar projects across the country.

Three years ago, Jantzen Renewables agreed to sell the Helios 1 solar photovoltaic cluster to OMV Petrom.

The project sits in Băbăița commune in Teleorman County and has a peak capacity of 710MW. The companies completed the transaction in 2024.

Jantzen Renewables also plans another solar development called Helios 2 in southeastern Romania. The project will deliver 463MW of solar capacity once developers secure grid connection approval.
