  • President Bola Tinubu has expanded the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas to include electric vehicles to lead Nigeria’s clean mobility strategy.
  • The initiative will deploy CNG and EV infrastructure, vehicle conversion kits, and financing solutions nationwide to promote affordable, efficient, and environmentally friendly transportation.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved expanding the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG) to include electric vehicles. The initiative will now operate as the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (PiCNG & EV). It will coordinate Nigeria’s clean mobility strategy.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, said the expanded mandate will cover gas-powered and electric vehicles. It will oversee infrastructure, financing, and nationwide adoption.

Meanwhile, the initiative will continue to expand compressed natural gas use. It will deploy Mother and Daughter Stations, Integrated Refuelling Units, and CNG-powered vehicles and equipment. It will also sustain nationwide vehicle conversion programmes.

At the same time, PiCNG & EV will develop and roll out electric vehicles. It will support EV charging infrastructure and related investments across the country. This shift reflects the government’s commitment to affordable, energy-efficient, and sustainable transportation.

The presidency said gas remains a strategic fuel for transportation. It helps reduce costs, strengthen energy security, and conserve foreign exchange. The inclusion of electric vehicles further supports sustainable mobility goals.

Furthermore, President Tinubu has directed the Executive Chairman of PiCNG & EV to establish a framework for rapid deployment of vehicle conversion kits. He stressed that Nigerians must access these kits at affordable rates. The initiative will work with CreditCorp Nigeria, financial institutions, and partners to design flexible financing options.

The President also ordered faster deployment of Mobile Refuelling Units. These units will expand access to CNG while permanent infrastructure develops.

Through this expansion, the government aims to leverage Nigeria’s gas resources and promote cleaner energy. The initiative positions the country for a more resilient and sustainable transport future.
