SEFA Launches Hydrogen Programme in Africa

  • AfDB’s SEFA launches a Green Hydrogen Programme Call for Proposals, offering up to $20 million to support early-stage project development across Africa.
The initiative targets bankability and scale-up, funding feasibility studies, engineering design, and advisory services to move projects toward financial close.

The African Development Bank’s Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA) has launched a Call for Proposals under its new Green Hydrogen Programme. The programme invites private sector developers to submit projects focused on green hydrogen and its derivatives across the continent.

Meanwhile, the programme, funded by the Germany and approved in late 2025, will provide pre-investment financing of up to $20 million. SEFA will allocate this funding to three to five top-ranked projects, subject to due diligence.

SEFA will deliver financing mainly through reimbursable grants. These funds will support advisory services that help projects reach Final Investment Decision or financial close. Specifically, developers can use the funding for feasibility studies, engineering design, procurement preparation, construction planning, and transaction advisory services.

Dr Daniel Schroth, Director of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency at the AfDB, said green hydrogen offers Africa a strong opportunity to decarbonise hard-to-abate industries while building new value chains. He added that the programme will help projects move from early development to bankable stages, addressing the complexity of this emerging sector.

The application window opened on Friday, April 10, 2026 at 09:30 GMT and will close on 11 May 2026 at 17:00 Abidjan time. Developers must submit proposals through the SEFA platform, where they can also access full eligibility criteria and application details.
