- Liberia will use $57 million in World Bank funding to expand the Mount Coffee Solar Park and deploy battery energy storage systems.
- The project will improve grid reliability, increase renewable energy capacity and strengthen electricity access across the country.
The Government of Liberia has secured US$125 million in financing from the World Bank to accelerate national development, with US$57 million dedicated to the Regional Emergency Solar Power Intervention Project (RESPITE).
The Government will use the RESPITE funding to expand the Mount Coffee Solar Park from 20 MW to 30 MW. It will also deploy Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to improve grid reliability, integrate more renewable energy into the national grid and strengthen electricity supply.
Additionally, the Government will upgrade the country’s electricity transmission and distribution networks. It will also modernise infrastructure at the Mount Coffee energy complex to improve operational efficiency and increase the resilience of Liberia’s power system.
Beyond the energy sector, the Government will channel the remaining financing into digital connectivity and road infrastructure to support broader economic growth and national development.
Through RESPITE, Liberia aims to expand clean energy generation, improve electricity access and strengthen grid stability with modern solar and energy storage infrastructure.
The project will also create opportunities for engineering, procurement, construction and technology companies that support renewable energy development. At the same time, it will encourage greater private sector participation and strengthen Liberia’s growing clean energy market.
