POWERCHINA has completed construction of the 27MWp/20MWac Lunsemfwa Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Project in Zambia after receiving the project’s taking-over certificate. The certificate marks the formal handover of the facility. The project is located in Zambia’s Central Province. It has an installed capacity of 27MWp and includes a 33kV/66kV step-up substation and two 66kV transmission lines, each approximately one kilometre long.
POWERCHINA developed the project using a hydro-solar complementary model that integrates solar power generation with the existing infrastructure of a hydropower station. The company said the Lunsemfwa Solar PV Project is the first new energy project in Zambia to adopt this approach.
POWERCHINA completed engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning before connecting the facility to the national grid. Furthermore, the company achieved grid connection 26 days ahead of schedule by implementing detailed construction planning and effective workflow coordination throughout the project.
In addition, the Lunsemfwa Solar PV Project will help Zambia diversify its energy mix by increasing renewable electricity generation while complementing existing hydropower resources. The project will also strengthen electricity supply and improve the resilience of the country’s power system.
The project reinforces POWERCHINA’s presence in Zambia’s renewable energy sector as the country continues to expand clean energy generation and reduce its dependence on hydropower alone.
