The Rural Electrification Agency is commissioning a 3MW solar hybrid plant at Yakubu Gowon University in Abuja under Phase II of the Federal Government’s Energizing Education Programme.
Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe will commission the facility on September 16. Meanwhile, the World Bank Group is supporting the programme as the Federal Government expands clean and reliable power infrastructure across public institutions.
The Energizing Education Programme targets federal universities and university teaching hospitals. Through successive phases, the initiative seeks to improve electricity supply for teaching, learning and innovation.
Solar Project Targets Reliable Campus Power
The new plant will provide dedicated renewable generation for Yakubu Gowon University, formerly known as the University of Abuja.
The university attracts students from across Nigeria. Therefore, the project gives the renewable-energy programme a broad national dimension beyond its immediate campus application.
The Rural Electrification Agency said targeted renewable-energy investments can strengthen critical public institutions. In addition, such projects can support Nigeria’s wider electricity-access and sustainability objectives.
Universities Offer Opportunities For Distributed Energy
Universities can provide suitable locations for distributed generation because they combine available land with concentrated electricity demand.
Furthermore, campuses require reliable power for classrooms, laboratories, administrative facilities, healthcare services and digital infrastructure. This demand can make universities suitable sites for renewable-energy projects.
Nigeria has numerous federal universities and teaching hospitals. As a result, similar projects could provide opportunities to expand clean-energy infrastructure across other public institutions.
The Yakubu Gowon University project therefore forms part of a broader effort to demonstrate how renewable generation can support critical public services.
