- This is coming on the heels of the forthcoming Ghanaian general elections.
The Ghanaian Government has approved the sum of $150 million for the improvement of electricity services in the country. This announcement by the Minister of Energy Mr. John Peter Amewu is coming shortly before the scheduled general elections which are to be held in December 2020. The funds will be injected into the electricity sector to curb technical losses as well as improve generation capacity in the sector.
Ghana has an average of about 4,399MW of installed generation capacity while actual available capacity hovers around 2,500MW. The challenges faced in the sector include poor network infrastructure and high generation costs, inadequate gas supply, among others
The approval of such a huge sum if channeled correctly will significantly improve generation capacity while strengthening an already weakened network infrastructure.
The big question is: why do Africans have to wait for elections to see improvements in infrastructure or quality of life?
